EC suspends two officials over NID data access

The Election Commission (EC) has suspended two officials for allegedly using their official user IDs to pull National ID (NID) information through a web platform, potentially allowing sensitive data to be accessed and shared online.

The matter was confirmed in two separate orders signed by EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed on Thursday.

The suspended officials are Md Abdur Sattar, acting Upazila Election Officer in Kathalia, Jhalakathi, and Kamona Rani Sarker, an office assistant-cum-computer typist at Panchagarh Sadar.

According to the orders, an investigation by the National Identity Registration Wing of the EC Secretariat found that the two officials used their respective CMS user IDs to carry out “NID Information Pull” through a web platform.

The investigation found that the process could enable criminals to obtain PDF copies of anyone’s NID and distribute them through the dark web or other online platforms, the orders said.

Considering the nature and seriousness of the alleged offences, the authorities said keeping the two officials away from government duties was necessary in the public interest.

Both officials were suspended under Rule 12(1) of the Government Servants (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 2018.

The orders said they would receive subsistence allowance and other benefits allowed under the existing rules during their suspension. The suspension orders took effect immediately.
