39 lakh snatched in broad daylight in Dhanmondi, 3 held

A man was allegedly robbed of Tk 39 lakh after withdrawing the money from a bank in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi area on Monday afternoon.

With the help of locals, police detained one of the alleged robbers, identified as Tanvir Abedin Jewel, 41, along with a pistol. Two other members of the alleged gang were later detained.

The incident took place near Dhanmondi Lake around noon.

According to Police Inspector Anwar Sattar, media and public relations officer of the National Emergency Service 999, a caller reported that three robbers riding a motorcycle snatched a bag containing Tk 39 lakh from a man who had just withdrawn the money from a bank.

The victim chased the robbers. At one point, one of them fell off the motorcycle and was caught by locals along with a pistol.

Following the 999 call, Dhanmondi police went to the spot and detained Jewel. Based on information obtained from him, several teams from Dhanmondi Police Station and a team from the Detective Branch later conducted a joint operation and detained two more alleged members of the gang.

Police said an operation was underway to determine whether anyone else was involved and to recover the snatched money.
