DINAJPUR, Aug 31: A student drowned while taking a bath in the Punarbhaba River in Mahutpara area of the Dinajpur town.
His body was recovered from the river around 16 hours after he went missing, on Monday morning.
The deceased was identified as Rifat, son of Rafiqul Islam, owner of Kishan Market at Nimnagar Phulbari Bus Stand area under Ward 8 of Dinajpur municipality.
He recently passed the SSC examination from Baniakhari High School in Chirirbandar upazila.
According to locals, Rifat and three friends went to the river around 3:30pm on Sunday to take a bath.
At one point, Rifat and one of his friends began drowning. Another friend on the bank raised the alarm.
Locals rescued the other boy, identified as Insan, and admitted him to Dinajpur Medical College Hospital. He is now in stable condition.
After failing to find Rifat, locals informed the Fire Service.
Officer-in-Charge of Dinajpur Kotwali Police Station Mohammad Nurunnabi also confirmed the death.
