Messi calls time on his international career

Lionel Messi’s Argentina career can be told through images: the teenager whose senior debut lasted only seconds before a red card, the painful walk past the World Cup trophy after defeat in 2014, the devastation of another Copa América final loss two years later, and finally the smile as he lifted football’s greatest prize in Qatar.

But the numbers tell another story: one of extraordinary longevity, repeated heartbreak, late redemption and records that may stand for generations.

Messi called time on his international career on Monday at the age of 39, more than two decades after first pulling on the senior Argentina shirt. He leaves as his country’s most-capped player and record scorer, having captained Argentina to the World Cup in 2022 and another final in 2026.

 Here is Messi’s Argentina career by the numbers.

207- Appearances

 No one has played more times for Argentina.

Messi’s senior international career stretched from his debut against Hungary in August 2005 to the 2026 World Cup final against Spain - 207 appearances across a 21-year span.

That longevity becomes even more remarkable when viewed through the generations he straddled: from Juan Román Riquelme and Javier Mascherano to Ángel Di María and Sergio Agüero, and eventually Rodrigo De Paul, Enzo Fernández and Julián Álvarez.

He leaves comfortably established as Argentina’s most-capped player.

125- Goals

Messi also departs as Argentina’s record goalscorer, with 125 goals in 207 appearances.

For much of his early international career, however, those individual numbers existed alongside an uncomfortable question: why had the extraordinary success of his Barcelona years not been replicated with Argentina?

Eventually, the trophies caught up with the goals.

21- Years in Blue and White

Messi’s senior Argentina career stretched from 2005 to 2026, crossing 21 calendar years.

He arrived as an 18-year-old prodigy in 2005 and departed at 39, having played international football in three different decades.

His game changed dramatically along the way. The explosive teenage dribbler gradually became a more economical creator and, deep into his 30s, adapted again, conserving his movement and choosing the moments in which he could still decide matches.

Germany 2006. South Africa 2010. Brazil 2014. Russia 2018. Qatar 2022. United States, Canada and Mexico 2026.

Six World Cups.

Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo became the first men to play in six editions of the tournament in 2026.

Messi began his World Cup journey as a teenager coming off the bench in Germany. Twenty years later, he was still captaining Argentina as defending champions.

34- World Cup Appearances

Messi finished with 34 World Cup appearances, extending his own men's all-time record when Argentina faced Spain in the 2026 final.

He had already broken Lothar Matthäus’s longstanding record during Qatar 2022, then returned four years later and pushed the mark considerably further.

His 34th appearance came at the age of 39 years and 25 days, making him the oldest outfield player ever to appear in a World Cup final and the second-oldest player overall to do so.

21- World Cup Goals

Messi’s World Cup scoring story is particularly striking because so much of it came late.

Before Qatar 2022, he had scored six times at the tournament.

He finished with 21 World Cup goals, second on the men's all-time list after Kylian Mbappé reached 22 during the 2026 tournament.

Messi’s first came against Serbia and Montenegro as a teenager in 2006. Two decades later, he was still scoring on football’s biggest stage.

23 - World Cup Wins

Messi also leaves with another outright record: 23 World Cup victories.

He overtook Miroslav Klose during the 2026 tournament, finishing six wins clear of Mbappé’s 17 at the time.

Given that Messi played 34 matches at the tournament, he won more than two-thirds of all the World Cup games in which he appeared.

9 - Successive World Cup Appearances with a Goal

One of Messi’s less obvious records may be among the hardest to match.

Across Qatar 2022 and the 2026 tournament, he scored in nine consecutive World Cup appearances.

The streak began against Australia in the last 16 in Qatar and continued through the Netherlands, Croatia and France before Messi scored in his first five appearances of the 2026 tournament. It finally ended against Switzerland.

The previous record was six successive appearances, shared by Brazil’s Jairzinho and France’s Just Fontaine.

4- Finals Lost Before the Breakthrough

Messi’s Argentina story was not always defined by trophies.

Before finally lifting a senior international title, he suffered defeat in four major finals:

• 2007 -Copa América

• 2014 -World Cup

• 2015 -Copa América

• 2016 - Copa América Centenario

Those were the four senior finals Messi had lost when he first announced his international retirement in 2016.

The final three defeats came in three successive summers.

For years, those near-misses shaped perceptions of Messi at home. His Barcelona achievements were relentlessly measured against Diego Maradona’s success with Argentina, and every international disappointment reopened the same debate.

The 2016 defeat proved the lowest point.

After Argentina lost the 2016 Copa América Centenario final to Chile on penalties, Messi announced that his time with the national team was over.

He was 29.

Had the decision stood, his senior Argentina career would have ended without a trophy.

Instead, Messi returned.

And almost everything that had eluded him followed.

The contrast is extraordinary: the player who thought his Argentina story was finished in 2016 would go on to lead the country through its most successful spell in decades.

4 - Trophies from 2021 to 2024

Messi had already won the 2005 Under-20 World Cup and Olympic gold in 2008, but he had to wait until 2021 for his first title with Argentina's senior side. That Copa América triumph was his first senior international trophy.

Then the trophies came rapidly:

Messi scored seven goals as Argentina won the 2022 World Cup, culminating in the extraordinary final against France and the trophy that had eluded him throughout his career.

Suddenly, the central question surrounding his international career disappeared.

 39 - Final Farewell

Messi was 39 years and 25 days old when Argentina’s attempt to retain the World Cup ended with a 1-0 extra-time defeat by Spain in the 2026 final in New York New Jersey.

There was no second World Cup and no perfectly scripted farewell.

But perhaps he no longer needed one.
