Ángel Di María has paid an emotional tribute to Lionel Messi following the Argentina captain's decision to retire from international football.
Messi announced his retirement from the Argentina national team on August 31, bringing an end to an international career spanning more than two decades.
In a heartfelt social media message, Di María said it was difficult to accept the prospect of no longer seeing Messi in Argentina's sky-blue and white jersey.
“It is so difficult to read that we will not see you anymore,” Di María wrote, expressing the emotions shared by millions of Argentina supporters.
Di María said he felt fortunate to have been able to watch, enjoy and share so many years with Messi in the national team.
The former Argentina teammates enjoyed a long and successful international partnership, winning major honours together, including the 2022 FIFA World Cup and the Copa América.
Di María also praised Messi for fulfilling his dream of becoming a world champion and thanked his long-time teammate for everything he had given to Argentina.
“Thank you for everything. You are eternal and the greatest in history,” Di María said in his tribute.
