BB, UCB sign refinancing scheme for agriculture and rural economy

Bangladesh Bank and United Commercial Bank PLC (UCB) have signed an agreement for a Tk 30 billion refinancing scheme aimed at increasing agricultural production, strengthening the agricultural value chain, and creating greater income and employment opportunities in rural areas.

The fund will provide financing for various agricultural and rural activities in different districts of the Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions. These activities include agricultural production, storage and transportation of farm produce, marketing, agro-based industries, food and agricultural processing, exports, and other income-generating activities in rural areas.

Customers will be able to access the loans at an interest rate of up to 7 percent. The maximum loan tenure will be three years, with a grace period available for certain activities, depending on the nature of the project.

UCB will use its branches, sub-branches, agent banking outlets and group lending channels to make the financing available to farmers, small entrepreneurs and people engaged in income-generating activities in rural areas.

Bangladesh Bank Deputy Governor Dr. Md. Kabir Ahmed, Executive Director Arief Hossain Khan, and Director of the Agricultural Credit Department-2 AKM Saiduzzaman were present at the signing ceremony.

Representing UCB were Deputy Managing Director Md. Ridwanul Hoque and Head of the SME & Agri Banking Division Mohammad Salim Chowdhury, along with other officials concerned.

The speakers said the initiative is more than just a lending programme; it is an effort to create new opportunities for farmers, small entrepreneurs and people living in rural areas.

A farmer can use the loan to increase production. An entrepreneur can expand a business. A family can increase its income, while new employment opportunities can be created in rural communities.

In other words, if the financing reaches the right people at the right time, it can bring meaningful and tangible changes to the rural economy.

The speakers called for everyone’s cooperation in ensuring that the benefits of this opportunity reach the people who need them most.
