Nepalese students at Rajshahi University (RU) have proposed introducing a special scholarship for those affected by the recent natural disasters in Nepal.

RU Vice-Chancellor Professor Md Faridul Islam said the university would take steps to launch a “Disaster Scholarship Scheme” if the necessary funding is secured.

A delegation of Nepalese students studying at the university met the vice-chancellor at the conference room of the university’s administrative building on Wednesday afternoon.

During the meeting, they briefed him on the devastation caused by the recent disasters in Nepal and the financial and other difficulties faced by students as a result.

Considering the financial hardship faced by disaster-hit families, the students proposed introducing a special “Disaster Scholarship Scheme” at RU. They said the initiative would help affected Nepalese students continue their studies despite the financial strain caused by the disaster.

Expressing sorrow over the loss and damage caused by the disaster in Nepal, the vice-chancellor conveyed his sympathy to the students.

Welcoming the proposal, Prof Faridul Islam said, “Necessary steps will be taken to introduce the scholarship, subject to receiving funds from the appropriate authorities.”
