LNG imports, supply to increase to ease energy crisis: PM

Prime Minister Tarek Rahman has said steps have been taken to increase LNG imports and supply to address the country’s energy crisis.
Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday, he said discussions were underway with an interested company to set up a floating LNG terminal in the Kutubdia area of the deep sea off Maheshkhali in Cox’s Bazar.
He said LNG supply from the proposed terminal is expected to begin by December 2028. If implemented, the initiative will significantly increase LNG imports within the next two years and help improve the country’s energy supply.
The Prime Minister also said work was underway on a proposal to urgently set up two more floating LNG terminals near Payra and Mongla ports to meet energy demand in the southwestern region.
He said the proposed terminals would improve the overall energy supply situation and help ease the country’s gas shortage.
