Classified loans rise to Tk6.07 lakh crore in June

Classified loans in Bangladesh’s banking sector rose to Tk6,06,555 crore in June 2026, indicating that the bad-loan problem continued to worsen despite measures taken by Bangladesh Bank.
The classified-loan ratio also increased to 32.98 per cent, meaning nearly one-third of all bank loans are now classified.
The situation deteriorated further during the April-June quarter. Classified loans increased by Tk17,851 crore from Tk5,88,704 crore in March, while the ratio rose from 32.26 per cent to 32.98 per cent.
The March figure was already Tk31,487 crore higher than the Tk5,57,217 crore recorded in December 2025.
As a result, classified loans increased by about Tk49,338 crore in just six months.
The figures indicate that the banking sector’s bad-loan problem has yet to turn around, with more loans continuing to fall into the classified category.
The rise is particularly concerning as banks are already facing weak credit demand, pressure on profitability and higher provisioning requirements.
At the same time, Bangladesh Bank has been working to bring hidden and irregular loans into the official books and improve loan recovery.
For banks, the challenge is becoming increasingly clear: the immediate priority is no longer simply to increase lending, but to recover the huge amount already stuck in bad loans.
