Govt to buy 70,000 tonnes of fertiliser from Morocco

The government has approved the import of 70,000 tonnes of DAP and TSP fertiliser from Morocco at a total cost of nearly Tk688.71 crore to meet farmers’ demand and maintain agricultural production.

The Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase approved the proposals at a meeting chaired by Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury at the Secretariat on Wednesday.

Of the total, 40,000 tonnes will be DAP fertiliser and 30,000 tonnes TSP. The DAP will be imported through the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) under a government-to-government agreement.

The approved price for DAP is $894 per tonne, bringing the total cost of 40,000 tonnes to $35.76 million, or Tk440.92 crore. The cost will be met from the agricultural subsidy budget.

The government recently renewed its agreement with Morocco for DAP imports, with the price determined based on prevailing international market rates under the agreed pricing mechanism.

For the 2026-27 fiscal year, the government has set a target of importing 560,000 tonnes of DAP from Morocco. So far, 200,000 tonnes have been imported.

The committee also approved a proposal to import 30,000 tonnes of TSP from Morocco under the seventh lot of the government-to-government agreement.

The TSP will cost Tk247.79 crore, with the price set at $669.33 per tonne.

The latest approvals bring the total planned import to 70,000 tonnes, comprising 40,000 tonnes of DAP and 30,000 tonnes of TSP, at a combined cost of about Tk688.71 crore.

The government imports fertiliser from different countries under government arrangements to ensure adequate supply during the agricultural season and provide fertiliser to farmers at fixed prices.
