1,500 vehicles to join 11-party long march

Preparations have been completed for the 11-party alliance’s long march from Dhaka to Chittagong, with nearly 1,500 vehicles expected to join the programme, Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Professor Mia Golam Parwar said.

He said the initial plan was to organise the long march with around 1,000 vehicles, but according to information available until Friday (September 4) morning, the number had increased to nearly 1,500.

Golam Parwar made the remarks at a press conference on Friday to brief the media on the final preparations for Saturday’s (September 5) long march.

Inaugural rally at 7:00 AM

The Jamaat secretary general said the inaugural rally in Dhaka would begin at 7:00 AM on Saturday. After the rally ends at 8:00 AM, the vehicle convoy will leave for Chittagong’s Laldighi Maidan via the Dhaka-Chittagong highway.

He said rallies would be held at several points along the route, including Narayanganj and Cumilla. However, to save time, not all leaders of the 11 parties would speak at every stop.

An advance delegation would reach the next rally venue ahead of the main convoy and deliver speeches there, while the main convoy and senior leaders would arrive later, he said.

Target to reach Laldighi by evening

Golam Parwar said the organisers hoped the convoy would reach Laldighi Maidan in Chittagong by evening or Maghrib, provided there was no traffic congestion or mechanical problem.

A public rally involving leaders of the 11 parties would be held at Laldighi Maidan.

He said participants in the long march would be given delegate cards, while every vehicle would carry a sticker and identification number.

Separate arrangements have been made for vehicles carrying senior leaders, security teams, medical teams, ambulances, IT and media teams. Different officials would be assigned responsibility for various sections of the convoy, he added.

Participants told not to leave vehicles

Participants in the long march have been instructed not to get off their vehicles along the route.

Local leaders and activists of the 11 parties would ensure gatherings at the roadside rallies, he said.

Participants have also been advised to carry dry food, water and necessary medicines for the day-long journey.

New vehicles to join at the rear

No new vehicle would be allowed to join the middle of the convoy after the long march begins. Those wishing to join the programme would have to join at the very end of the convoy, Golam Parwar said.

Seeking cooperation from the government and administration, he said the programme was not aimed at bringing down the government. Rather, it was intended to press for the implementation of the six-point demands, including implementation of the public mandate in the referendum, improvement of the law and order situation and an end to public suffering.

The Jamaat secretary general said political programmes by opposition parties were part of democratic practice in a democratic state. Therefore, they expected cooperation from the government and administration to hold the programme peacefully.

He also said leaders of the 11 parties had met senior police officials and provided them with detailed information about the long march.

Call to welcome convoy along highway

Golam Parwar urged people to stand along both sides of the Dhaka-Chittagong highway to welcome the long march convoy and its participants.

Regarding preparations in Chittagong, he said there had been a strong response to the public rally at Laldighi Maidan. Leaders of the 11 parties in Chittagong city had completed the necessary preparations, he added.

The Jamaat secretary general sought prayers and cooperation from the people for the successful completion of the programme.

Expressing gratitude to media workers, he said journalists were investing time and effort to cover the long-distance programme. He thanked them on behalf of the 11 parties.
