RAB-10 has arrested the prime accused in the death of an elderly woman who was electrocuted by an illegal electrical connection installed around a sugarcane field in Daulatdia, Goalanda upazila of Rajbari district, and in the alleged attempt to conceal her body.
Major Farhan Mahmud Moktada, Company Commander of RAB-10’s Faridpur unit, confirmed the matter in a press release on Saturday (September 5) afternoon.
The accused, Rafiqul Islam, is the son of late Jalil Mridha of Ainuddin Pramanik Para in Daulatdia. He was arrested at around 2:00 AM on Saturday from the Bepari Para area under Kotwali Police Station in Faridpur district.
At a press briefing, RAB officials said that despite being physically weak due to poverty, 55-year-old Nabiran Nesa worked as a farmer on leased sharecropping land.
On September 2, she went to work on her leased farmland at around 4:00 PM When she did not return home in the evening, her daughter began searching the surrounding area. At around 9:00 PM, she found her mother’s body lying in the water on a neighboring plot belonging to Rafiqul Islam Mridha. With the help of local residents, the victim was taken to Goalanda Upazila Health Complex, where the attending physician declared her dead.
During the initial investigation, it was believed that the victim had fallen into the water and died due to a heart-related condition. However, family members later searched the area around the incident and discovered that Rafiqul Islam Mridha had illegally installed an electrical connection using GI wire around his sugarcane field.
The victim allegedly came into contact with the live wire and was electrocuted. To cover up the incident, the accused allegedly dragged the body from the paddy field and placed it in the sugarcane field. They also allegedly dug a pit beside the sugarcane field with the intention of disposing of the body.
The RAB official further said that a regular case was filed at Goalanda Ghat Police Station in connection with the incident. The investigating officer subsequently sent a requisition to RAB-10 in Dhaka to identify and arrest those involved.
RAB-10 increased intelligence surveillance to identify the individuals involved and arrest those actually responsible for the incident. The accused was arrested within eight hours of receiving the requisition.
