A member of the police Special Branch (SB) was beaten to death in Aminbazar of Savar, Dhaka, on Saturday night.
The deceased was identified as Altaf Hossain, 58, an SI of the SB who was posted at the Malibagh Zone in Dhaka. He was attacked by a group of people in the Bardeshi area of Aminbazar around 8:00 PM.
His younger son, Ariful Islam, 26, was also seriously injured in the attack.
According to police, citing eyewitnesses, Altaf and his son were attacked by 10 to 15 people in front of a vest factory in the Medina Housing area of Bardeshi, Aminbazar, following an altercation over parking a private car.
They were taken to Suhrawardy Hospital around 9:30 PM, where attending doctor declares him dead on arrival.
Savar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Saiful Alam said police were at the scene and that details would be provided later.
Dhaka District Police Superintendent Shamima Parveen said the SI was attacked near his home over a trivial dispute concerning car parking.
She said Altaf and his son were attacked when he went to intervene in an argument between two groups over parking a private car.
Police are trying to arrest those involved in the incident, she added.
SI Masud Rana of the SB's Savar Zone said Altaf owned property in Aminbazar. Police are trying to determine the exact motive behind his killing.
