State Minister for Local Government Mir Shahe Alam on Tuesday stated that the government will not take any blame regarding local body elections, ensuring full neutrality without state interference.

Speaking to reporters at the Secretariat before a preparatory meeting for the Gram Police rally, Mir Shahe Alam stressed the government’s commitment to holding free, fair, and credible polls.

He stated that the government refuses to bear any stigma over local government elections, promising full cooperation with the Election Commission (EC) to deliver a festive election atmosphere.

The state minister reiterated the government’s request to the EC to complete five tiers of local elections—including city corporations, municipalities, upazilas, and union parishads—within the current fiscal year.

He disclosed that around Tk 6,000 crore has been allocated in the budget for these local body polls.

Responding to queries about completing the schedule by June, he explained that the government urged the EC to find suitable dates within this fiscal year. He added that if the polls are delayed beyond June, the allocated funds will carry over to the next fiscal year.

The minister clarified that election timelines are determined through high-level discussions involving the cabinet secretary and relevant ministry secretaries, leaving the final execution responsibility to the EC.

He called on the EC via the press to wrap up all local government elections before the end of the current fiscal year.
