Mbappe, Valverde goals lead Madrid to victory over Inter

Real Madrid opened their UEFA Champions League campaign with a 2-1 victory over Inter Milan at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.
Kylian Mbappé and Federico Valverde scored for the Spanish champions, while substitute Carlos Augusto netted the solitary goal for the visitors.
Mbappé put Real Madrid ahead in the 14th minute, capitalizing on a defensive error by Inter's Yann Bisseck following a setup from Brahim Díaz to finish on the first touch.
The goal brought Mbappé's total tally in the Champions League to 71, moving him into joint-fifth place alongside Real Madrid legend Raúl on the competition's all-time scoring list.
Real Madrid doubled their lead nine minutes later. Real captain Valverde intercepted a mistimed clearance from Inter goalkeeper Josep Martínez to score into an open net, sending the hosts into halftime with a 2-0 advantage.
Inter created several scoring opportunities throughout the match.
Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois denied first-half attempts from Marcus Thuram and Lautaro Martínez, while Curtis Jones saw his shot strike the crossbar prior to the interval.
Martínez made several key saves in the second half to deny Mbappé further goals, while Courtois maintained Real's advantage against persistent Inter attacks.
Inter reduced the deficit in the 77th minute when Augusto converted a pass from Lautaro Martínez.
Real Madrid endured pressure in the closing minutes to secure the 2-1 result.
The win provided key momentum for manager José Mourinho following a 1-0 La Liga defeat to Real Betis on Friday.
The match held personal significance for Mourinho, who previously managed Inter Milan to a Champions League title in 2010.
