The upcoming local government elections will not be held on a party basis, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A M M Nasir Uddin has said. He said only candidates who meet the legal requirements will be allowed to contest, while those who are not eligible under the law will not be allowed to take part.

The CEC made the remarks on Wednesday after opening a police training course at the Rajarbagh Police Auditorium in Dhaka.
Asked whether Awami League candidates could take part in the elections despite the ban on the party’s activities, Nasir Uddin said the elections would not be held on party lines.

“Those who are legally eligible can contest. Those who are not eligible because of legal restrictions will be rejected,” he said.

The CEC said the Election Commission wants the local government elections to be free, fair and acceptable, as it did in the 13th parliamentary election.
