Houthis take control of Bab el-Mandeb

Iran-backed Houthi forces have seized the strategic Mayyun Island in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, tightening their control over the vital shipping route at the southern entrance to the Red Sea.
The Houthis captured Mayyun, also known as Perim, on Friday after Yemeni government forces withdrew from the island on Thursday, according to reports citing a Yemeni government official.
The strategically located island lies in the middle of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. Witnesses said armed Houthi fighters had deployed along the coast and were moving around in military vehicles.
The roughly 50-km-long Bab el-Mandeb Strait connects the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and is a key maritime route for vessels travelling between Asia and Europe through the Suez Canal.
The waterway has become even more important for global energy supplies after disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. The Houthi advance has raised concerns over the safety of shipping and energy supplies in the region.
The Houthis launched an offensive against Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces last week, capturing the strategic Red Sea port city of Mocha before advancing towards Bab el-Mandeb.
