APBn seizes gold worth Tk 13.69m at Dhaka airport

Airport Armed Police Battalion (APBn) members have seized 861.8 grammes of gold worth an estimated Tk 13.69 million and arrested three people at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.

The arrested are Md Nasir Molla, 40, Sohag Sheikh, 24, and Md Hachan Mia, 23.

Airport (13) APBn Superintendent of Police Mohammad Rezaul Kabir disclosed the information on Friday.

He said the three were behaving suspiciously on a footpath north of the airport roundabout late Thursday night. When they tried to flee after noticing police presence, APBn members detained them.

A search of their bodies led to the seizure of 861.8 grammes of 21- and 22-carat gold jewellery, he said.

During preliminary interrogation, the three allegedly said the gold had been brought into Bangladesh from different countries through unidentified passengers for smuggling purposes. They also allegedly admitted to being involved in gold smuggling at the airport for a long time.

A regular case has been filed against the three with Airport Police Station.
