The Italian Embassy in Dhaka will organise a special programme next month to facilitate the regular and legal recruitment of Bangladeshi workers through language education and job-specific skills training, Italian Ambassador to Bangladesh Antonio Alessandro has said.

He disclosed the plan during a courtesy meeting with Mahdi Amin, adviser to the Prime Minister and spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s Office, at the Prime Minister’s Office in Tejgaon on Tuesday afternoon.

During the meeting, the Italian ambassador outlined a proposed training programme in line with the Bangladesh government’s emphasis on third-language education and the recruitment of skilled workers abroad.

He said the Italian government would organise the special initiative next month to recruit skilled workers from Bangladesh. Under the programme, interested candidates would receive training in the Italian language, the country’s civic culture and social customs, as well as the practical and technical skills required for employment in Italy.

Welcoming the initiative, Mahdi Amin said sending skilled workers to international labour markets and ensuring third-language education for young people were among the top priorities of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

He expressed hope that such training programmes would help develop a skilled workforce and further strengthen economic ties between the two countries.

During the meeting, the Italian ambassador also highly praised Bangladesh’s responsible and distinguished role in United Nations peacekeeping missions in promoting global peace.

Highlighting the partnership between the two countries, he reaffirmed Italy’s commitment to working with Bangladesh as a trusted friend and partner in addressing challenges, resolving problems and exploring new opportunities.

The meeting also highlighted close people-to-people ties between the two countries. It was noted that around 250,000 Bangladeshi nationals currently live in Italy, contributing significantly to Bangladesh’s foreign exchange earnings through remittances.

The two sides also held detailed discussions on expanding opportunities for legal migration, discouraging irregular routes and simplifying visa procedures and increasing the number of visas issued to Bangladeshi students seeking to study in Italy.

Federico Zamparelli, Deputy Head of Mission at the Italian Embassy in Dhaka, was also present at the meeting.
