The government is working to turn Bangladesh into a trillion-dollar economy by 2034 through better management of energy, electricity and water resources, Prime Minister’s Economic and Planning Adviser Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir has said.

He said the government had taken initiatives to address the energy crisis by drilling new gas wells, expanding solar power and utilising the capacity of state-owned Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Limited (BAPEX).

It is also focusing on long-term management of water resources to expand agricultural and fisheries production, he said.

Titumir made the remarks while speaking to journalists at his residence in Kalimahar village of Rajbari on Friday night.

He said many problems in the power sector could have been addressed if consumers had been involved in power generation rather than being treated solely as users. Through solar power, consumers could generate electricity themselves, he said.

The adviser blamed corruption and nepotism under previous governments for the current energy crisis, saying the situation had been further aggravated by the war in the Middle East.

The government has already incurred losses of around Tk 20,000 crore by purchasing gas at higher prices, he said.

Titumir said electricity could be generated relatively easily and at lower cost using gas. Therefore, efforts were underway to drill new gas wells, with plans to drill around 150 wells.

He said BAPEX would be utilised for the work, adding that previous governments had failed to properly utilise the state-owned company's capacity due to nepotism.
