Dengue death toll rises to 12 in CTG

Two more people have died of dengue in Chattogram, raising the district’s death toll from the disease to 12 this year. Another 87 people have been diagnosed with dengue, taking the total number of cases to 2,883.

The figures were released in the daily dengue report of the Chattogram Civil Surgeon’s Office on Sunday.

One of the latest deaths occurred at Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) and the other at Evercare Hospital Chattogram.

Arpita, 26, from the Kotwali area, was admitted to CMCH on September 10 and died the following day. She had tested positive for dengue. According to doctors, she died from expanded dengue syndrome involving multiple organ failure (MOF), disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), sepsis and intrauterine death (IUD).

Shamsun Nahar Khanam, 50, from the Agrabad Housing Society area, was admitted to Evercare Hospital on September 11 and died in the emergency department the same day. She had tested positive for dengue before admission. Doctors cited irreversible cardiorespiratory failure, hypovolaemic shock, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and type-1 respiratory failure as the causes of death.

According to the Civil Surgeon’s Office, 77 dengue patients were admitted to government hospitals and 10 to private hospitals in the past 24 hours. A total of 210 patients are currently undergoing treatment at different hospitals.

Of them, 105 are at CMCH, 35 at the Bangladesh Institute of Tropical and Infectious Diseases (BITID), 17 at the 250-bed Chattogram General Hospital, four at Combined Military Hospital, 24 at upazila health complexes and 25 at private hospitals and clinics.

So far this year, 2,457 dengue patients have been diagnosed at government hospitals and 426 at private hospitals and clinics. A total of 2,673 patients have recovered and been discharged.

Meanwhile, the measles situation in Chattogram also remains a concern. The Civil Surgeon’s report said 75 suspected measles patients were admitted to hospitals in the past 24 hours, taking the number of suspected cases admitted this year to 7,782.

Of them, 743 have so far been diagnosed with measles�"486 in Chattogram city and 257 in 15 upazilas. Fifteen people have died among the suspected measles cases, including 13 in the city and two in the upazilas.
