Bangladesh in talks with China over high-speed bullet trains: Minister

Bangladesh is in talks with China to bring high-speed bullet trains capable of travelling at around 350 kilometres per hour, Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat said on Sunday.

“We are in discussions about bringing high-speed bullet trains from China. They can travel at around 350 kilometres per hour. Even if our trains run at a lower speed, that would be acceptable,” he said.

The minister made the remarks while addressing a monthly meeting of the district law and order committee at the Sherpur Deputy Commissioner’s conference room.

He also said Bangladesh currently has eight operational airports, some of which are in poor condition, while several new aircraft are expected to arrive.

“We will have to build a new airport within the next 10 years. In that case, Mymensingh division will be given priority,” he said.

On the country’s political situation, Millat said there was no precedent worldwide for a government returning after its prime minister, ministers, MPs and leaders had fled following a mass uprising.

Addressing the Awami League, he said those hoping for Sheikh Hasina’s return in December were “harbouring false hopes” and should instead focus on a process of self-reform.

The minister also said several development projects were being considered for Sherpur, including construction of a motel in Jhenaigati and embankments along the Maharashi and Someshwari rivers to protect the area from sudden hill torrents.

The meeting was chaired by Deputy Commissioner Farida Yasmin. Sherpur-3 MP Mahmudul Haque Rubel, Sherpur-2 MP Fahim Chowdhury, reserved-seat MP Dr Sansila Jebrin Priyanka, Police Superintendent AKM Zahirul Islam and District Council Administrator ABM Mamunur Rashid Palash, among others, attended.
