The family of senior journalist Pulak Chatterjee received Tk 1 million from daily Samakal three days after his death.
Samakal deposited the money into the bank account of Pulak’s wife, Priyanka Chatterjee, on Monday (September 14), following a request he left in a note before his death.
The matter was confirmed by Samakal’s Barishal bureau chief Sumon Chowdhury.
Pulak, 57, was a former Barishal bureau chief of Samakal and a familiar face in the local media. He also served as general secretary of the Barishal Press Club.
Police recovered his body from the Samakal office on Parara Road in Barishal city on Friday evening (September 11).
Family and office sources said Pulak had been unemployed since leaving Samakal in May 2023 and had been going through a difficult time.
He left five notes before his death. In one, he asked Sumon Chowdhury to collect his outstanding dues from Samakal and hand them over to his family.
The notes also mentioned his wife Priyanka and only daughter Prakriti. He also asked his younger brother Dipak Chatterjee to look after them.
Police initially suspected suicide. The exact cause of death will be known after verification of the notes and receipt of the autopsy report.
