IPL auction returns to India after 3yrs overseas

After the 2023 auction in Kochi, the next three auctions were held in Dubai, Jeddah and Abu Dhabi. Franchises had reportedly raised concerns over the logistical challenges and the cost of travelling overseas with large delegations.

Taking those concerns into account, the BCCI has decided to bring the auction back to India. However, the next mega auction could still be held overseas, according to the report.


Accommodation for franchise representatives will be a key consideration in selecting the venue. With India’s wedding season running from October to December, securing enough rooms at five-star hotels could prove challenging.

The BCCI will require more than 100 rooms for several nights, and the venue is expected to be finalised based largely on whether that accommodation can be secured.


The Governing Council did not reach a final decision on the rule at Tuesday’s meeting. The matter could be taken up again at a meeting expected within the next month.

Most franchises are reportedly in favour of scrapping the rule, while some teams have sought to retain it for at least another season, arguing that they built their squads with the rule in mind.
