Rodríguez announces retirement from international football

The 2014 World Cup Golden Boot winner confirmed his decision through an emotional social media message on Tuesday, marking the end of a journey that began with his senior debut against Bolivia in October 2011.

Rodríguez represented Colombia in three World Cup tournaments, including 2014, 2018, and 2026. His defining moment came during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, where he scored six goals in five matches to claim the Golden Boot award, highlighted by a memorable volley against Uruguay that led to a high-profile transfer to Real Madrid.

Over his international career, Rodríguez earned 131 caps for Colombia, registering 31 goals and 43 assists while wearing the number 10 jersey and serving as team captain. He led Colombia as captain to the 2024 Copa América final, where they finished as runners-up to Argentina.

His final appearance for Colombia came on July 7 in a penalty shootout defeat against Switzerland in the Round of 16. Having recently signed with domestic club Atlético Nacional, Rodríguez expressed gratitude to his country and teammates as he shifts his full focus to prolonging his club career.
