Police yet to be modernised despite changing crimes

Police have not yet been modernised as required despite changes in the nature of crime, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said on Wednesday.
He said the nature of crime has changed, while digital technology is now needed to prevent and investigate crimes. But the police have not yet been modernised accordingly.
The government is therefore taking steps to establish modern cyber security labs at police stations and upazila level, he said.
The minister made the remarks at a programme marking the 43rd founding anniversary of the Bangladesh Crime Reporters Association (CRAB).
Speaking about the professional risks faced by crime reporters, Salahuddin said their work involves collecting news while facing various risks.
He said the government could consider providing risk allowances to those engaged in crime reporting.
Highlighting the need to amend existing laws, he said offenders are often arrested under current laws but later secure bail.
“Necessary amendments to the law should be made in line with the changing nature and time of crimes,” he said.
The home minister also pointed to links between gambling, drugs and various crimes among young people.
He said these issues must be given importance in efforts to control crime.
He said action should not be taken only after a crime is committed.
“Research must first be conducted to understand why crimes are taking place. Then crimes should be reduced by addressing their root causes,” he said.
He added that work on the issue is underway.
