US Constitution Day marked at DU

The US Embassy in Dhaka marked Constitution Day at Dhaka University (DU) on Thursday (September 16) commemorating 250 years of American democracy.

US ambassador Brent T. Christensen attended the programme at university’s Nobab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Building Hall alongside Law Minister Mohammad Asaduzzaman; DU acting vice-chancellor and pro-vice chancellor (Academic) Prof Abdus Salam; constitutional experts, academics and students.

Christensen said, ongoing debate, efforts to build consensus and U.S. Constitution’s emphasis on separation of powers, judicial independence and the ability to adopt amendments had contributed to its resilience. 

He also said, constitution had inspired democracies around the world for more than two centuries.

Programme featured a public ceremony and panel discussion, along with an essay competition and quiz contest for students. An exhibition titled American Founders Museum was also organised as part of event.
