HOSSAINPUR, KISHOREGANJ, Sept 18: Residents of several villages in Hossainpur Upazila of Kishoreganj have been suffering due to the poor condition of a nearly one-kilometre stretch of road connecting the Hossainpur-Kishoreganj road to Kamarpara via Dhanakura Haji A Khaleque Government Primary School.
The road is located in Araibaria Union and has developed numerous potholes and damaged sections due to a lack of maintenance, locals said.
Farmers, traders, students and other residents use the road every day despite the difficulties.
According to locals, the road was paved with brick chips around 16 years ago, but no major repair or improvement work has been carried out since then. Over the years, the bricks have worn away, leaving large potholes and uneven sections.
The situation worsens during the rainy season as water accumulates on parts of the road, they said.
Abdul Matin, a local auto-rickshaw driver, said driving on the road had become difficult.
“The potholes damage different parts of our vehicles, while passengers also suffer during journeys. If the road is paved quickly, it would reduce the long-standing suffering of local people,” he said.
Rakib Mia, a fifth-grade student at Dhanakura Haji A Khaleque Government Primary School, said he uses the road every day to attend school.
“It is very difficult to travel on the road because of its poor condition. The situation becomes worse during the rainy season,” he said.
Local trader Haridas Karmakar said the poor road condition was also affecting the transportation of goods and business activities.
“Paving the road would improve both business activities and communication in the area,” he said.
Resident Rafiqul Islam said locals had repeatedly raised the issue with elected representatives but had yet to see any effective solution.
He urged the authorities to take immediate steps to pave the road.
Araibaria Union Parishad Chairman Mohammad Khurshid Uddin said he was aware of the condition of the road.
“A mosque, a temple and a primary school can be reached through this road. Its condition is poor. I have spoken to the higher authorities about it before, and I will raise the issue again,” he said.
