3 killed in road mishaps in three districts

Three people were killed and six others injured in separate road accidents in Fakirhat Upazila of Bagerhat District, Kamalganj Upazila of Moulvibazar District and Noakhali District in three days.

FAKIRHAT, BAGERHAT: A 47-year-old man was killed and two others were seriously injured when a bus rammed their van on the Khulna-Mongla highway in Fakirhat Upazila of the district on Friday morning.

Mohammad Zahidul Islam Khalil was returning to Khulna with his 20-year-old son Nahid Hasan and a cow they had bought at Betaga cattle market when a Khulna-bound Sohag Paribahan bus struck the van from behind in the Khajura area of Lakhpur at about 11:30 am.

Khalil was thrown from the van and died on the spot. Hasan and the van driver were taken to Khulna Medical College Hospital, where Hasan was reported to be in critical condition. The cow was unharmed.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Katakhali Highway Police Station (PS) Sheikh Shahjahan said the bus had been seized, but its driver and assistant fled. Khalil’s body was handed over to his family after legal procedures.

KAMALGANJ, MOULVIBAZAR: An 18-year-old woman was killed and four others injured when two CNG-powered auto-rickshaws collided head-on in Kamalganj Upazila of the district late Thursday night.

The crash occurred around 11:20 pm on the main road in Sreenathpur, under Munshibazar Union. The victim, Rumali Begum, was a resident of Ramchandrapur Village.

Two of the injured - 19-year-old Hafiza and 55-year-old Nazir Mia - were in critical condition and were transferred to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment. The other injured were Lipon, 28, and auto-rickshaw driver Shuvo Chandra. 

Police said both vehicles were travelling in opposite directions when they collided. Locals rescued the injured and took them to Moulvibazar Sadar Hospital, where Rumali was declared dead.

Kamalganj PS OC Kamar Uddin said the two damaged auto-rickshaws were recovered and legal action was under way.

NOAKHALI: A 46-year-old schoolteacher was killed on Wednesday after an unidentified vehicle struck his motorcycle in Begumganj Upazila of the district, police said.

Shafiqul Azim alias Sumon was hit on the Chaumuhani-Maijdee regional highway near Haji Safi Manzil, close to Joynal Abedin School and College, in the afternoon. 

He was critically injured and taken to Noakhali General Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Sumon was an assistant teacher at Uttar Kutubpur Government Primary School.
 
Begumgnaj PS OC Md Shamsuzzaman said they are investigating the accident and have sent police personnel to the scene.
