Two killed as train hits auto-rickshaw in Ctg

Two people were killed when a train hit a battery-run auto-rickshaw in Satkania upazila of Chattogram on Sunday afternoon.

The accident occurred around 2:30 PM at the Purba Katgar railway crossing in Ward 4 of Kaliaish Union.

The deceased were Abu Taher, 50, son of Abdul Mabud alias Kana Mamud of Maingapara area in Kaliaish Union, and auto-rickshaw driver Abdus Shukkur, 40, of Ward 3 in Dharampur Union.

According to local sources, Abu Taher was a grocery shopkeeper. He was returning home by the battery-run auto-rickshaw after shopping at Dohazari. When the auto-rickshaw entered the railway line at the Purba Katgar crossing, a train travelling from Cox’s Bazar towards Chattogram hit it.

The auto-rickshaw was crushed in the collision. Abu Taher fell under the train and died on the spot.

Locals rescued the seriously injured driver Abdus Shukkur and took him towards Chattogram Medical College Hospital, but he died on the way.

Following the accident, local people stopped the train, creating tension in the area.

Officer-in-Charge of Chattogram Railway Police Station Sujon Kanti De said two people were killed in the train collision. He said railway police were working to bring the situation under control after agitated locals stopped the train.
