Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam has submitted his bail bond before a Dhaka court after obtaining an eight-week bail from the High Court in a case filed over an alleged attempt to kill a private car driver by beating and strangling him.

Nazrul appeared before Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Awlad Hossain Mohammad Zunayed on Sunday and submitted the bail bond.

Driver Obaidur Rahman filed the case with Pallabi Police Station on July 21, accusing five people, including Nazrul, of assaulting him and attempting to strangle him to death over an alleged extramarital relationship and suspicion that he had leaked an intimate video.

The High Court granted Nazrul eight weeks bail on August 10.

According to the case statement, Obaidur lived at his sister's residence at "Rosegarden Tower" in Kalshi area of Pallabi and worked as Nazrul's private car driver. Nazrul, who is related to the family, used to visit the residence.

The complainant alleged that Nazrul subsequently became involved in an alleged extramarital relationship with his niece. After learning about it, Obaidur informed his family and asked Nazrul to refrain from the relationship. Nazrul allegedly became angry and threatened to kill him.

The case statement further says that a group in Moghbazar allegedly obtained some intimate videos involving Nazrul and the woman and began blackmailing him. Nazrul allegedly suspected that Obaidur had recorded the videos and supplied them to the media and the group.

According to the complaint, on July 14, Obaidur was called to a drawing room by accused Aminur Rahman. The other accused allegedly joined him there and beat him indiscriminately with sticks.

At one point, Aminur allegedly pushed Obaidur to the floor and strangled him in an attempt to kill him. Hearing his screams, Obaidur's mother Tahmina and younger sister Mim rushed to the room and raised an alarm, prompting the accused to flee.

Obaidur, who sustained injuries, later received treatment at Kurmitola Hospital.

He also alleged that the accused had continued threatening to kill him wherever they found him following the attack.

The other accused in the case are Aminur Rahman, Masum Billah, Motassim Billah and Rakibul Hasan.
