US F-16 crashes in Germany, second crash within a week

A US Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcon crashed near Spangdahlem Air Base in western Germany on Tuesday, with the pilot ejecting safely.

The aircraft crashed at around 2:30 PM local time during a multi-aircraft training exercise, officials confirmed. Emergency personnel recovered the pilot shortly after the crash, and medical teams treated him for minor injuries.

Following the incident, remaining aircraft participating in the exercise were diverted to Ramstein Air Base. Firefighters and disaster relief teams from the Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm district responded to the scene to conduct containment operations.

An US Air Force spokesperson confirmed that the cause of the crash is currently under investigation. The aircraft was assigned to the 52nd Fighter Wing, which operates f-16s in support of US and NATO missions across Europe.

The incident follows a similar crash in October 2019, when an F-16 from the same base went down near Zemmer-Rodt during a routine training flight.

It also comes shortly after another US Air Force F-16 crashed during a training exercise in Grand Traverse County, Michigan, on September 17.
