Baridhara footpath death: Teen sent to juvenile correction centre

A juvenile accused in the death of construction worker Mehedi Hasan Mim, who was run over by a car while taking rest on a footpath in the capital's Baridhara diplomatic zone, has been sent to a juvenile correction centre.

Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-8 Judge Md Abdul Moktadir passed the order on Thursday after a hearing.

Defence lawyer Md Alamgir Hossain sought bail for the teenager, arguing that he had been sitting beside the driver in the car and that the accident occurred unintentionally as the victim, who was hearing- and speech-impaired, could not move away quickly despite the horn being sounded.

The defence also told the court that the teenager’s family had paid Tk9 lakh in compensation to the victim’s family through a local settlement.

Earlier, Gulshan Police Sub-Inspector and investigation officer Md Arifin Islam produced the teenager before the court and sought his detention at a juvenile correction centre.

The investigator said CCTV footage showed the teenager getting out through the driver’s-side door of the private car immediately after the incident. He said the investigation had found preliminary evidence of the teenager’s involvement and was still underway.
