Eight US sailors attempted suicide during Iran war deployment

Eight US Navy personnel assigned to the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group attempted suicide during its extended deployment, which included combat operations against Iran, Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao said in a letter to Congress obtained by CNN.

The figure covers sailors from the carrier, its air wing, escorting destroyers and other units in the strike group. No service member died by suicide during the deployment, according to Cao.

The carrier group, involving around 6,000–7,000 sailors, spent more than six months without a port visit while conducting operations in the region. Cao also confirmed that one sailor went overboard in August and another was stopped from going overboard in March; both received medical care.

The Navy said sailors had access to chaplains, psychologists, social workers and other mental-health resources, while also stating it had not observed an increase in suicidal thoughts or attempts aboard the ship.
