BAPEX finds new gas field with 97.69 BCF reserves

Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Limited (BAPEX) has discovered new natural gas reserves at an exploration well in Companyganj Upazila of Noakhali, with total estimated reserves of 97.69 billion cubic feet (BCF) across two distinct zones.

The state-owned exploration agency confirmed the gas discovery on Monday (November 2), following a successful flare test at the Sundalpur South-1 exploration well located in Rampur Union of the upazila. The well is expected to supply approximately 15 million cubic feet of gas per day to the national grid.

Financed jointly by the Government of Bangladesh and BAPEX’s internal funds, drilling operations commenced on July 8 utilizing BAPEX’s Bijoy-10 rig. Technical crews drilled to a depth of roughly 3,289 meters before identifying gas deposits across the two targeted zones.

Energy officials plan to extract gas from the Sundalpur South-1 well over a 20-year operational period. At prevailing consumer market rates, the total value of the discovered gas reserves is estimated at approximately Tk 5,809 crore.

Sundalpur South-1 Exploration Well Project Director Md. Rokibul Hasan confirmed the discovery, noting that technical teams will conduct observation and Drill Stem Testing (DST) over the next 15 days to evaluate pressure parameters and determine whether oil or other hydrocarbons are present in the structure.
