JU VC removed, Nurul Islam appointed

Professor Dr Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan has been removed as vice-chancellor of Jahangirnagar University (JU), with Professor Dr Md Nurul Islam appointed as his successor.

The decisions were announced in separate notifications issued by the Secondary and Higher Education Division of the Education Ministry on Friday (September 26).

Professor Kamrul Ahsan was appointed vice-chancellor of Jahangirnagar University on September 5, 2024.

According to the notification, Professor Nurul Islam, a professor of the Department of Geography and Environment, has been relieved of his position as vice-chancellor of Dhaka Central University and appointed vice-chancellor of Jahangirnagar University with the approval of the President and Chancellor.

His appointment was made under Section 11(1) of the Jahangirnagar University Act, 1973.

Under the terms of his appointment, Professor Nurul Islam will serve as vice-chancellor for four years from the date he assumes office or until his retirement, whichever comes first.

He will receive the salary and allowances applicable to his current position, along with other benefits attached to the post under university regulations.

The notification states that, as the university's chief executive officer, the vice-chancellor must remain on campus on a full-time basis. The President and Chancellor may also cancel the appointment at any time if deemed necessary.

The order was issued in the public interest, according to the notification.
