280–300 gathered outside JaSaD office being verified

Police are verifying the identities and involvement of around 280 to 300 people taken into custody after gathering outside the central office of the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JaSaD) in Dhaka.

Deputy Commissioner of DMP’s Motijheel Division Md Harun-or-Rashid said this while speaking to journalists outside the JaSaD office on Saturday evening.

He said members of the Bangladesh Awami League and its affiliated organisations had gathered there, and police took initial action after receiving information about the gathering.

Police are examining why they gathered, what information they had and what activities they were involved in. Police have also received information that some of them chanted “Joy Bangla”, he said.

Harun-or-Rashid said the exact number was yet to be confirmed, but it was estimated at around 280 to 300.

“We are taking them to police stations for their safety and to verify the entire incident,” he said.

Those found to have been involved in any wrongdoing would face cases or other legal action, while appropriate measures would be taken for those found not to be involved, he added.

Asked whether journalists or people from other professions were among those taken into custody, the DMP official said the matter was being verified.

He also said police were checking whether the gathering had received permission. As the incident falls under Paltan Police Station, the people taken into custody may be kept at nearby police stations if necessary for the investigation.
