Bangladesh face Malaysia as Asian Games knockouts begin

Bangladesh will begin their men's cricket campaign at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games with a quarter-final against Malaysia on September 29, with rain-hit group matches adding an element of uncertainty to the knockout stage.

The four highest-ranked Test-playing nations - India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka - received direct entry to the quarter-finals. Bangladesh therefore avoided the preliminary round and will enter the competition at a stage where one defeat would end their gold-medal hopes.

Malaysia secured their place in the last eight after their final Group B match against Oman was abandoned without a ball being bowled on Saturday. The washout allowed Malaysia and Hong Kong to progress, while Oman were eliminated without a victory.

Rain also disrupted Group A, where Nepal and Afghanistan advanced after the match between Nepal and hosts Japan was interrupted. Nepal had reached 149-4 in 15 overs before the weather brought the contest to an end.

The interruptions have made preparation and match conditions important considerations as the tournament moves into the knockout phase.

Unlike the group stage, where teams have opportunities to recover from a setback, the quarter-finals leave little room for error.

Bangladesh have previous success in the Asian Games, winning the men's cricket gold medal in Guangzhou in 2010. They also claimed bronze at the 2023 edition in Hangzhou, where cricket was played in the T20 format.

The current side, led by Litton Das, will be looking to translate that experience into another medal challenge. Malaysia, meanwhile, will arrive with the advantage of having already played in the preliminary stage, although their final group fixture offered no opportunity for match practice.

Bangladesh's quarter-final is scheduled for September 29. Pakistan will face Hong Kong and India will meet Afghanistan on September 28, while Sri Lanka take on Nepal on the following day.

For Bangladesh, the immediate task is to negotiate the opening knockout match and keep their pursuit of the Asian Games title alive.
