Bill Gates warns AI could cause one billion deaths

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has warned that artificial intelligence (AI) could drive events causing up to a billion deaths if used by people with malicious intent, while calling for government regulation of the technology.
Speaking to NBC’s Meet the Press, Gates said AI companies cannot rely solely on self-regulation and urged lawmakers and law-enforcement agencies to establish mandatory safeguards and monitoring.
Gates said AI is powerful enough to enable unprecedented harm when combined with people who intend to misuse the technology. Asked whether Washington should pass legislation regulating AI development, he replied, “Absolutely.”
His remarks come amid growing debate among technology leaders and US lawmakers over how to manage the risks associated with rapidly advancing AI systems.
