TikTok to pay Alabama $100m over teen safety

TikTok has agreed to pay Alabama at least $100 million and introduce new safety measures for teenagers under a settlement reached shortly before the case was scheduled to go to trial.

Under the agreement, teen users in Alabama will face a two-hour daily limit on TikTok use, while access will be blocked between midnight and 6 AM. The platform will also prompt users to take breaks after 15 minutes of continuous use.

TikTok will strengthen age-verification and parental-control systems, make teen accounts private by default and restrict adults’ ability to discover young users. Teenagers will also be able to switch to a non-personalised content feed, while cosmetic-enhancement filters will be prohibited for them.

Alabama filed the lawsuit in 2025, alleging that TikTok’s platform could negatively affect young people’s mental health and well-being. The settlement avoids a trial that was scheduled to begin on September 28.

The settlement requires TikTok to pay $100 million, with the total potentially rising to as much as $300 million if specified conditions involving other states are met.
