Olise scores late as France beat Belgium

France made a winning start under Zinedine Zidane, defeating Belgium 1-0 in the UEFA Nations League on Monday.

Bayern Munich winger Michael Olise scored the decisive goal in the 88th minute with an individual effort to secure France’s second consecutive victory in the competition.

France made nine changes to the starting XI that defeated Turkey on Friday. However, Zidane’s side had to wait until the closing stages to break the deadlock.

Olise controlled the ball with his shoulder inside his own half before racing into Belgium’s defence. He then beat a defender and calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner to put France ahead.

France missed captain Kylian Mbappe, who was left out of the squad after suffering a knee injury in the match against Turkey. In his absence, expectations were high on Desire Doue, but the forward failed to convert any of his five attempts, with one effort hitting the crossbar.

Belgium also created several chances, with wingers Mika Godts and Dodi Lukebakio repeatedly troubling France’s inexperienced defence. However, the hosts failed to find the net.

The victory keeps France at the top of Group A1, while Zidane’s side have now won both of their Nations League matches under the former France captain.

France will face Italy next Friday, while Belgium will take on Turkey.
