A deep depression over the North Andaman Sea and adjoining Myanmar coast is moving north-northwestward and may cross the coast over Myanmar and the Kyaukto area by this morning.

In view of the situation, the Chattogram and Cox’s Bazar seaports have been asked to lower the No. 1 distant warning signal and hoist the No. 3 local warning signal.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department issued a special bulletin on Tuesday (September 29), signed by meteorologist Dr Muhammad Abul Kalam Mallik.

According to the bulletin, the deep depression was located in the same area at midnight on September 28, at 17.0° north latitude and 97.1° east longitude. It is moving further north-northwestward and is in the process of crossing the coast.

The weather department said the maximum sustained wind speed within 48 kilometres of the centre of the deep depression is 50 kilometres per hour, rising to 60 kilometres per hour in gusts or squalls. The sea remains rough near the centre of the system.

The Mongla and Payra seaports have also been advised to maintain caution.

Meanwhile, fishing boats and trawlers operating in the North Bay of Bengal have been advised not to venture into the deep sea or the northern and northeastern Bay of Bengal until further notice.
