US nuclear deal won’t affect Rooppur: Adviser

The nuclear cooperation agreement recently signed between Bangladesh and the United States will not have any negative impact on the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, Prime Minister’s Information and Broadcasting Adviser Dr Zahed Ur Rahman said on Tuesday (September 29).
He made the remarks while responding to questions from journalists at a press briefing on the progress of various government activities at the Secretariat.
Asked whether the new nuclear agreement with the US would have any impact on the Rooppur project, Zahed Ur Rahman said, “I don’t think it will.”
He said Bangladesh has only recently entered the era of nuclear power and needs to keep its options open as it considers the country’s future energy requirements.
“It cannot be ruled out at this stage that Bangladesh may build more nuclear power plants in the future,” he said.
The adviser said nuclear power involves much more than simply constructing a power plant.
“Fuel supply, training of engineers and other relevant manpower, among other issues, also need to be considered,” he said, adding that Bangladesh could enter into agreements and pursue cooperation with different countries based on its needs.
He pointed out that Bangladesh has continued to maintain relations with different countries based on its national interests, even amid tensions between major powers.
“You will also notice that despite the crisis between the US and Russia, our Foreign Minister held a meeting with the Russian Foreign Minister,” he said.
Zahed Ur Rahman said Bangladesh would continue its engagement and cooperation with countries including China, India, Russia and Türkiye wherever necessary in pursuit of its national interests.
“Bangladesh will engage with China, India, Russia and Türkiye—whoever is necessary—in accordance with its interests. I don’t think there will be any problem with this,” he said.
Meanwhile, asked about reported complications over the use of Pakistani airspace for transporting uranium from Russia for the second unit of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, the adviser said he had no information about the matter.
He said he knew that the uranium would arrive and that there would be no delay.
However, he said he was not certain whether the uranium would be transported through an alternative route without using Pakistani airspace.
“There is nothing to say from the government’s side on this matter,” he added.
