DU removes ‘Shaheed Osman Hadi Hall’ name

Dhaka University (DU) has begun removing the name ‘Shaheed Osman Hadi Hall’ from the main gate of its Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall, with the original name set to be restored within the next few days.

The removal work began around 2PM on Wednesday (September 30). The ‘Shaheed Osman Hadi Hall’ name had been put up by students on December 20 last year following the death of Inqilab Mancha spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi. The proposed renaming was later recommended at a Dhaka University Syndicate meeting in January, but the recommendation did not receive final approval.

Hadi, who had announced his intention to contest the Dhaka-8 constituency as an independent candidate in the 13th parliamentary election, was shot in the capital’s Paltan area on December 12 last year. He was later taken to Singapore for advanced treatment and died there on December 18.

The university’s recent decision to restore the original name follows discussions over the issue at the Senate. Dhaka University Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Prof Mohammad Almojaddeed Alfechani told bdnews24 that the Senate had decided to retain the previous names and the university was implementing that decision.
