The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has extended the deadline for submitting online VAT returns for the July and August 2026 tax periods until October 15 without any late-filing penalty.
The NBR announced the decision in an official order signed by Sheikh Md Masudur Rahman, second secretary of its VAT (Monitoring, Statistics and Coordination) wing, on Thursday (October 1).
The order said the extension was granted following changes introduced in the VAT return filing provisions in the national budget for fiscal year 2026-27.
Under the revised provisions, taxpayers are allowed to submit returns after the completion of every three tax periods. As a result, many businesses did not submit their returns for the July and August tax periods within the original deadline through the e-VAT system.
To facilitate those taxpayers, the NBR extended the filing deadline for the two tax periods until October 15 under Section 64(3) of the Value Added Tax and Supplementary Duty Act, 2012.
The NBR said taxpayers taking advantage of the extended deadline would not have to pay any late-filing penalty.
However, businesses required to file returns for the September 2026 tax period must also submit their September return through the e-VAT system by October 15, in addition to filing the July and August returns.
