World Animal Day today

World Animal Day is being observed on Sunday (October 4) across the world to raise awareness about animal rights and welfare and promote humane treatment of all animals.

Animals play a vital role in maintaining the balance of nature. The day highlights the importance of protecting animals, ensuring their wellbeing and encouraging people to treat them with kindness and compassion.

World Animal Day was officially recognised on October 4, 1931, at an international animal protection congress held in Florence, Italy. The date coincides with the feast day of St Francis of Assisi, widely regarded as the patron saint of animals and nature.

Various animal welfare organisations, including the UK-based Naturewatch Foundation, observe the day through awareness campaigns and other initiatives.

The observance focuses not only on wildlife but also on domestic animals and other species that contribute to human life and wellbeing. It seeks to build greater awareness of animals’ role in maintaining ecological balance while encouraging stronger measures for their protection and welfare.

The origins of World Animal Day date back to March 24, 1925, when German writer and animal welfare advocate Heinrich Zimmermann organised the first celebration at the Berlin Sports Palace in Germany.

The observance was later moved to October 4 in 1929, before the date received formal international recognition in Florence in 1931.

Since then, October 4 has been observed worldwide as a day to advocate for animal protection, welfare and a more compassionate relationship between humans and animals.
