Three people, including a Chinese engineer, died from severe burn injuries following a furnace malfunction at Pharmik Steel Limited in the Mirsarai Economic Zone in Chittagong.
The fatal incident occurred on September 28 when molten iron splashed from a faulty furnace, burning four individuals. Three of the victims succumbed to their injuries while undergoing treatment, while another injured worker, Jewel, 36, remains hospitalized.
The deceased were identified as Chinese engineer Zengling Hong, 53, Shariful Islam, 27, and Monir Hossain, 27. Shariful Islam and Zengling Hong passed away at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka, while Monir Hossain died at Chittagong Medical College Hospital.
Factory management held a meeting with Shariful Islam's family at Jorarganj Police Station on Saturday evening regarding a proposed 10 lakh taka compensation package, though a final decision remains pending.
Jorarganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdul Halim stated that although the victim's family declined to file a lawsuit, police are consulting higher authorities to pursue necessary legal action against the factory administration.
