SRB member killed being run over by truck while on highway duty

A member of the Special Reserve Battalion (SRB) was killed after being run over by a truck while checking suspected vehicles on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway in Feni early Sunday.

The deceased was identified as Mohammad Alamgir Hossain, 46, of Shantibagh village in Kendua upazila of Netrokona. He was serving with SRB-7 in Feni on deputation from the Bangladesh Army, where he held the rank of warrant officer.

According to Mahipal Highway Police, the incident occurred around 1AM on Sunday near the Star Line filling station in Fatehpur on the Chattogram-bound lane of the highway.

At the time, SRB personnel were conducting checks on suspected vehicles. They had stopped a covered van and signalled another truck to pull over. However, the truck allegedly ignored the signal, hit the covered van and attempted to flee. At one point, it ran over Alamgir, who was standing on the left side of the road, before falling into a roadside ditch.

After being alerted through the national emergency service 999, members of Mahipal Highway Police rushed to the scene. They rescued Alamgir and the injured truck driver, identified as Md Sajib, and took them to Feni General Hospital where Alamgir was declared dead. 

Sajib, son of Salam Gazi of Shyampur village in Bakerganj upazila of Barishal, was admitted to the hospital for treatment.

Mahipal Highway Police OC Md Noman said Alamgir’s body had been kept at the Feni General Hospital morgue for an autopsy. The truck and the covered van involved in the crash were taken into police custody.

“Legal proceedings are underway.''

AR Muzaffar Hossain, assistant director of SRB-7, said Alamgir was killed after being struck by a vehicle while performing his duty.

“Necessary measures are being taken in connection with the incident,” he added.
