Four establishments were fined a total of Tk 20,000 for various irregularities during a market monitoring drive conducted by the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) in Mirpur on Sunday.
The drive was conducted in the Mirpur 60 Feet and BNP Bazar areas by a team from the Dhaka Divisional Office of the DNCRP, led by Assistant Directors Shikdar Shahinur Alam and Indrani Roy.
The team inspected shops selling LPG cylinders, fruits, edible oil, eggs, sweets and other essential commodities during the drive.
An LPG cylinder retailer was fined Tk 3,000 for failing to issue sales receipts to customers. A fruit shop was fined Tk 5,000 for not displaying a price list, while a sweet shop was fined Tk 10,000 for failing to mention the production and expiry dates on its products.
An egg shop was also fined Tk 2,000 for not displaying a price list.
During the inspection, the team found the overall supply of edible oil normal, while the prices of eggs and other essential commodities were also stable.
The officials advised traders to display price lists properly, issue sales receipts to customers and ensure that food products clearly mention their production and expiry dates.
They also urged consumers to check prices, expiry dates and other relevant information before purchasing food and other essential items.
“Several irregularities, including failure to display price lists, issue sales receipts and mention production and expiry dates on food products, were found during the market monitoring drive. Fines were imposed against the establishments in accordance with the law,” said Assistant Director Shikdar Shahinur Alam.
“The supply and prices of essential commodities are currently normal. Regular market monitoring will continue to protect consumers’ rights,” he added.
The DNCRP said such monitoring drives would continue to ensure fair prices, compliance with consumer protection laws and a healthy market environment for consumers.
