A vibrant ‘Shorot Mela’ featuring Bangladeshi women entrepreneurs was held in Sharjah, bringing together Bangladeshi expatriates and their families in a festive celebration of the country’s culture, traditions and locally made products.

Organised by the Bangladeshi Women Entrepreneurs Forum UAE, the day-long fair was held on Saturday, October 3, at the hall of Hudaibiyah Restaurant in Sharjah.

The main objective of the event was to promote Bangladeshi heritage and culture in the UAE while providing women entrepreneurs with an opportunity to display and sell their products. The fair continued from afternoon until midnight, attracting a large number of Bangladeshi expatriates and their family members from Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman and surrounding areas.

The fair featured a wide variety of traditional Bangladeshi sweets and pithas, along with sarees, three-piece outfits, jewellery, handicrafts and other locally made products produced by women entrepreneurs. The colourful display of traditional food, clothing and handicrafts created a festive atmosphere at the venue.

The event also included free medical services for expatriates, alongside various cultural activities highlighting Bangladesh’s rich traditions and heritage.

Founder of the Bangladeshi Women Entrepreneurs Forum UAE, Roksana Majumder, said one of the key objectives of the initiative was to empower Bangladeshi women living abroad as entrepreneurs and provide wider recognition for the products they create.

Forum President and Admin Nazma Sultana said such initiatives were important for encouraging women entrepreneurs and introducing the younger generation to Bangladesh’s culture and heritage.

Entrepreneurs participating in the fair said such events provide an important platform for promoting their businesses and products among expatriate communities. They said the fairs not only allow them to interact directly with customers but also create opportunities for networking, cooperation and mutual support among entrepreneurs.

Visitors also praised the organisers for arranging the event. They said such programmes provide expatriate families with an opportunity to spend quality time together while remaining connected to Bangladesh’s culture and traditions, particularly helping the younger generation maintain a connection with their roots.

The organisers expressed hope that initiatives like the ‘Shorot Mela’ would help expand the activities of Bangladeshi women entrepreneurs in the UAE and increase the international recognition of their products. They also hoped such cultural gatherings would further strengthen communication, harmony and cultural bonds within the Bangladeshi expatriate community.

The event was organised by Roksana Majumder, Founder of the Bangladeshi Women Entrepreneurs Forum UAE; Nazma Sultana, President and Admin; and Saida Kaiser Jahan Simon, Moderator.

Speaking at the event, women’s leader Nishat Jahan Chowdhury Nishu highlighted the fair’s objectives, future plans for supporting women entrepreneurs and the importance of preserving Bangladeshi culture among expatriates.

Also present were Dr. Amana Mohammad, Practitioner and Aesthetic Specialist; Engineer Sharfina Afroz, Moderator; and Sadia Afrin, Group Expert, among others.

With a strong emphasis on empowering women entrepreneurs and keeping the younger generation connected to their cultural roots, this year’s ‘Shorot Mela’ turned into a lively gathering of Bangladeshi expatriates in the UAE.
